JOMO, My Joy Of Missing Out

A few days back, I received this newsletter from Ankur Warikoo where he explained about this generation's one of the biggest problem : FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). With the world getting even smaller with the internet 24*7 in our hands, there is a constant fear among the Gen Z people about missing out that vacation that someone (which they can relate to) went to, missing out that awesome car someone bought, missing out dining in that fancy restaurant somebody was having dinner, missing out on that big luxurious apartment one of their colleagues just bought and many more. The list goes on.

Last weekend, I too was in that lane of FOMO, but my FOMO was that I could not make with my lil Kabir (who was in our home town with his grand parents). Also, I could not be with my parents either ( as they were on Mysore Ooty trip with my sister and brother-in-law).

So, I decided to convert this FOMO to JOMO and started with what I love to do these days😊.

  • Early morning wake up (special routine on Sundays ;)
  • Ride to the beach
  • Walking across the beach

About 45 minutes of walking across the beach, I just sat down on bench facing the beach with sun gazing up and getting myself ready for the day. Instantly, I thought to just settle down there for sometime. I don't know if it only happened to me but I was really astonished to do these simple things and felt something which cannot be experienced everyday !!

  • Unplugged my earphones and connected with nature and people around.
  • Hear the rhythm of nature in its own different sounds (birds chirping, sea waves touching the shore, light wind breeze and many more).
  • Heard people greeting "bagunnara" (How are you (in local laguage), greeting the sun and welcoming another day.
  • Small kids learning skating with their instructor - the moment was filled with a kind of joy which I did not experience while walking across the beach.
  • A bunch of people playing with wooden rods and having fun with each other.
  • 2 girls (one pretty and other her friend) with a boy. Probably the boy trying to impress the pretty one ;)

It is really surprising that these simple things in a span of half an hour which I experienced was really worth not missing at all. I already had started experiencing JOMO :)

As I was leaving the beach to have a ride across the coastline in my 4 wheeler (one of the thing I like to do when I am alone), I noticed a lady with some books with label of "Peace, Literature Books ..For Free". I did not get the point of free books. Generally, I won't bother, but that day I stopped to ask the lady about the free books. She explained that it was some writer who wanted to spread the message of peace and life changing lessons and the author was related to her. So she took the marketing campaign herself and would be distributing the books for free on Sundays. Wow, selfless service !!

After completing my ride, while I was returning, I had to visit a public restroom located at the side of the beach. The paid restrooms were very neatly maintained and I really wanted to appreciate the staff. But I could not find any except the public restroom guard who would collect the payment for using the restrooms. I appreciated the guard for the cleanliness of the washrooms in local language and he replied in Hindi “पैसा किस बात का ले रहे है” (what else for are we charging money?)😂😂. I was shocked and laughed at his reply also. Funny Moment !!

While I was about to get into my car after my conversation with the guard, I saw some people from my hometown by recognizing the registration number plate of the vehicle they had traveled in. Usually I won't start a conversation with strangers, but that day I greeted them in my native language and they were like delighted to hear that. The conversation went on and they told me about their tour plan. They also asked me places to visit which I was most excited to tell them. It was really glad that I started a conversation with them.

The day finally ended when I returned back home that day, but the moments were imprinted permanently in my memory that it took the shape of this blog. I experienced JOMO through very small things I did which I have mentioned below:

  • UNPLUG yourself to nature
  • Initiate a conversation with strangers
  • Appreciate someone
  • Share your experiences with others
  • Do things you like but could not do (because of any reason)
Hope this blog helps you in some or the other way. Please share your JOMO in comments.
